Festivals of Friendship
The Friendship Centre was recently awarded a £10,000
grant from the National Lottery 'Awards for All' scheme to go towards hosting
a programme of cultural events over the next year.
The 'Festivals of Friendship' programme - designed
to educate the community about the variety of diverse cultures in the area
- kicks off on Sunday 13 April with the celebration of Newroz, the traditional
Kurdish New Year's Day.
Den Barry, centre manager said: "This will be a truly
inclusive programme of activity which is not just focused on the serious
business of education, but is also aimed at bringing people together through
music, dance, laughter, food and celebration."
The programme fits in with the Government's Social
Cohesion agenda which aims to break down barriers within local communities
and foster new social networks and friendships. Other cultural events and
celebrations are being planned for later in the year including Chinese,
Bangladeshi, Polish and Jewish celebrations.
Look out for further events coming soon!
